"The Leadership Development Days have given me time to work alongside colleagues, to discuss ideas that could be used in our setting to improve the quality of the education that we provide." Karl Nicholas, Cheam Park Farm Juniors
What are the Leadership Development Days?
Leadership Development Days are structured school visits lasting one day, enabling pairs of school leaders to immerse themselves in the context and practice of another Challenge Partners school with expertise in a specific area, phase or subject. Through the days attendees will have the opportunity to learn about another school’s journey and strategies, observe lessons, address challenges and reflect with colleagues. Each Leadership Development Day is designed for 3-5 pairs from different schools, providing the opportunity for school leaders to collaborate with colleagues across the national partnership.
Leadership Development Days provide the opportunity to:
- Observe good practice in a good or outstanding school with a particular specialism
- Gain insight into the daily practice of another school. (Each day will include a session on the school’s journey, a learning walk, lesson observations, sessions on particular topics, time for reflection and questions)
- Reflect on your own and your school’s practice, gaining ideas from others
- Address common challenges and collaboratively explore solutions
- Work with Challenge Partners schools outside of your local hub

Who is it for?
Schools both inside and outside of Challenge Partners are invited to send pairs from their school. The days are intended for a headteacher or deputy head and one other senior or middle leader, however on subject-specific days department leads can attend with another member of their department.
Where is the programme currently available?
Over 30 schools will be hosting a Leadership Development Day from October 2016 to March 2017. The events are taking place in a range of areas including London, Essex, Nottingham, Leicester and Portsmouth. To find a Leadership Development Day near you, please see our map of events by term.
The topics are largely determined by frequent support requests from schools, such as maths, assessment, challenging the most able students and developing middle leaders.
What is the cost for schools to take part?
Costs are for each pair of senior leaders from a school. Leadership Development Days are £160 per pair for Challenge Partners schools, or £210 per pair for schools outside of Challenge Partners (both prices exclusive of VAT). Schools are able to apply via their Hub Manager to use hub funding towards Leadership Development Day attendance.
